The Irish Heather & Shebeen have witnessed amazing stories over the years…

here are some lovely & funny ones!!

I do an annual pub crawl with my friends....ladies only and we had a goal of hitting all of the “seedy pubs”. 2020 was our 5th annual and we see currently on hiatus but will be back at it when it is safe to do so!

We have stopped at the Irish Heather a couple of times over the years as a pallet cleaner....a nice clean, safe and comfy place! But that doesn’t stop me from having the ladies do something fun and challenging. One year, in the the middle of the day on a gloomy January Saturday, I had one of my friends jump up on a stool at the bar and sing a song. Your other patrons were a bit confused and somewhat concerned at first but she nailed the song and everyone got into it!
Thank you for always being there for us as a port in the storm. We can wait to visit you in your new location! We will be the ones singing at the bar!

Re-opening after the pandemic and sitting on those mini stools outside ❤️

We’ve been fans of The Heather since day 1. Every milestone birthday has been celebrated rated at either Carrall street locations, mostly in The Shebeen. St. Patrick’s Day any year, a must do. Can’t wait to come in for a pint at the new location! Good luck!

My birthday a few years back. I think 4 years ago.
My girlfriend told me we were going to see a ballet or play or something and I didn’t want to make her feel bad by being upset about it so I just pretended to be excited.
We went for a beer before the “play” across the street and then she urged me to just have 1 more beer but to have it at Irish Heather.

Walk inside and she’d surprised me with all my friends waiting inside.
That was my first time at the Heather and been back infinite amount of times since then.

My best memory is from the original
location. After ‘discovering’ The Irish Heather between classes at Simon Fraser’s Harbour Centre campus down the street, I brought in my brother and best friend. I was feeling especially smart that day having copied the way I saw others wearing their scarves. From behind the bar, and without consideration of my companions, Bucky said quiet loudly for everyone to hear, “Well, well. If it isn’t Rupert the Bear. What are you drinking tonight, Rupert?”

My second best memory has to do from a solo perch at the bar. The guys I was seated beside - more regulars than me - were discussing something they assumed was over my head. With their enthusiasm at a crescendo, Bucky leaned over and asked, “So what do you think of that?” I replied, “From the sublime to the ridiculous in the pour of a pint.” He raised his eyebrows thoughtfully and whispered, “Well done.”

My friends @stefreklaw and @k9innovation had the reception there and it was a fantastic end to a fantastic day

Favourite memory was the first time I walked into the original location back in 2003 for lunch by myself. Had soup, sandwich and a pint. I had just moved to Vancouver and this then became a regular ritual. I’ve since had many fun times there with friends and family. But that first pint of Guinness was special.

My friend @kevinrayray and I tried a round of green spot, yellow spot and red spot and christened it the stoplight challenge

And, Finn would of course pull towards the door on all his walks to do a “wolf” check.

Oh. Also on a day of day drinking I had my first tarot reading done at one of your tables

Your place was obscenely special to me in the short time I’ve lived in Vancouver. And o can’t wait to make more memories in the new place

I was in Dublin Ireland for my 50th birthday. While enjoying MANY pints and MANY stories at MANY pubs I found myself having a spirited conversation with a 2 locals. Non stop laughter was had!
After 4 days of Irish mayhem and some of the best “belly” laughs of all time, I found myself flying home with a slight hangover and a hole in my heart.
About a week later my friends made the call and we found ourselves reminiscing about our trip over a few Guinness at the Heather... it was wonderful and sad at the same time.
As we cheered our second (maybe 3rd) round, eye contact was made with 2 people across the bar! Screams and shouts where heard across the bar, as the people we chatted with in Ireland were having a PROPER PINT at the Irish Heather!
The rest is a blur!
Best day ever!

Our wedding! May 20 2017. I loved having all our favorite people at your long table 💛

My hen do in August 2017! Gosh we miss you guys!

We called it whiskey nite, a small group of friends who couldn’t get together all that often but always made time for whiskey nite at the Shebeen. Five years running till covid brought it to an end, we can’t wait to see the new spot and resume the tradition!

My favorite memory is when I had my birthday at the long table and took up the whole room! It was so much fun! Loved it

Ok. My story. The Irish Heather has been my go to place for years!! I lived in Dublin for a few months in 2009. What was first place I went to for a pint?
And did it meet the criteria?? Yes it did?

It’s my go to places for first dates, follow up with friends... AND THE FOOD
Dineout one time we had miniscule serving we ended up the Irish to fill our tummies.

I’m super happy you’re continuing on and thank you for the memories. ☘️🍀

Irish Heather is first place I enjoyed a whisky/scotch flight. It’s a constant that my friends and I used to visit before covid. Even celebrated my 40th there.

First place I had the pleasure of enjoying an Bruichladdich Octomore 5.1

My best memory is a snowy Christmas Day and walking into the original Heather with Bucky at the bar and about 3 others in there. I think it was the first Christmas Day that you opened. Locals & regulars only. It felt like going home.

My favourite story....

For my birthday celebration in February of 2010, the Swedish Women’s Hockey Team who had just won the Bronze Medal came in for a private function in the Shebeen. As they walked passed us, we all gave them a standing ovation. The players were first, then the coaches. We should have stopped there, but, continued our ovation as the King and Queen of Sweden walked past. The best was getting a call from Sean the next day asking if we were the idiots who gave Swedish Royalty a standing O.

Yes. Yes we did.

The new Shebeen at a Whiskey tasting for a friends birthday. I didn’t realize they had subsidized the original set of 4 so I spent the night buying everyone and anyone a glass of 18yo something that was 22$ a glass. I think my tab was $600.

Good times. Plus the 144 times I was at the old Heather, all fu***** great times.

I had my 40th birthday in June 27, 2015 in the Shebeen. It was a memorable night with great food and I was very happy with the price too.
Looking forward to seeing your new location

We were given a gift certificate by family in Ontario in 2019 and never used it ... sadly ... we discovered that the Heather was closing down in Gastown thanks to COVID, ... decided to reach out and Erin, what a rockstar, was actually able to find our gift card ... going to the new location where they’re going to honour it ... now that’s customer service! Love the Heather!!!

I can happily attest to attending a business social @ Shebeen about 7 years ago. At that event I met a great guy, who since that event has become a really good friend / business colleague & for me a valued mentor. And every time back at the bar, I appreciate that memory
— Arthur K
That time you had the cherry pitting event and you invited @followmefoodie there. Great time followed by a rewarding meal for our cherry labour ;)
— Stephanie H.
My fav memory is the sad but amazing Shebeen send off for Paul and Vince. So many hugs and amazing whiskey. AND, those two are finally as far away from me as one can get in Canada!!!

Getting married in Salt Tasting Room and Daniel going to Shebeen for his first whiskey as a married man, while working at The Irish Heather ❤️

My 35th Birthday - drank too much whisky - and tried to pay my bill with a blockbuster video card.
— @pintsandscrums
While meeting a client who wanted a remodel done they mentioned the great experience with Sean and the Heather group. @ljhconstruction started our company dinners at the Irish Heather. 4 years later we still like the Heather group best for our events. One of our team passed away and the picture is a fond memory (will share shortly).

I’d just bought a new digital camera in 2007 when my then-boyfriend and I stopped by the Irish Heather on a weekend afternoon and I snapped a “selfie” of us- our first photo together. Several visits later, over pints, it came up that we both though the Heather would make a pretty decent wedding venue. I think that was the extent of the proposal. We got married at the Heather in January 2008 and a few years later when we were looking for an equally Irish name to align with our firstborn’s, decided on Roisin- inspired in part by Roisin Heather who helped plan our wedding at the original location.
